France and East Timor
Bilateral relations
Xanana Gusmão, the President of Timor-Leste and José Ramos Horta, then Minister for Foreign Affairs, made visits to France in 2003 and 2006. Timor-Leste’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr José-Luis Guterres, visited France in February 2007.
The French Ambassador in Jakarta has been accredited to Timor-Leste since December 2002 and a cooperation office has been opened in Dili.
Trade between France and Timor-Leste remains very limited. Bilateral cooperation focuses on promoting the rule of law (training of journalists), in liaison with other donors, including multilateral ones (UNDP).
