11th edition of Latin America and Caribbean Weeks (16 May - 2 June 2024)

From 16 May to 2 June 2024, France is honouring Latin America and the Caribbean. With hundreds of cultural, scientific, political, economic and festive events organized on site and online, this 11th edition of Latin American and Caribbean Weeks (#SALC2024) is an opportunity to promote the historic and contemporary relations between Latin America and France, while enabling the French public to get to know the region better.

Discovering the wealth of creativity in the region

The 2024 edition draws on initiatives from embassies of Latin American and Caribbean countries in France, as well as associations, teaching and research institutions, international organisations and economic stakeholders.

From Bordeaux to Toulouse, from Paris to Cartagena de Indias, these Weeks offer the public a wide variety of Latin American and Caribbean creativity in France and show the French people’s interest in the region.

On 30 May, Radio France International (RFI), a faithful partner to this event, will present its Reporting in Spanish award to a Latin American journalism student.

From 31 May to 2 June, the Palace of Fontainebleau will host the Festival of Art History, where thousands of visitors can choose from dozens of events focusing on Mexico, this year’s guest country.

Political and economic events

This year’s event will also feature political and economic meetings to discuss the relationship between Latin America, the Caribbean and France, to promote partnerships and to strengthen synergies in order to tackle current challenges.

To this end, on 16 May 2024 the French Association for the United Nations will host a conference on “Latin America amid regional issues and global reconfigurations” at the Maison de l’Amérique latine.

On 22 May 2024, the International Economic Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Development Centre, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the French Development Agency (AFD) will bring together high-level Latin American and French representatives.

On 29-30 May, the Institute of the Americas will hold a debate among a broad panel of experts on the theme of social protection systems at its international conference with the support of the French Development Agency, the EU-LAC Foundation and the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.

On 27-29 May, the Centre for Research and Documentation on the Americas (CREDA) and Sorbonne-Nouvelle and Panthéon Sorbonne universities will host a conference on “The making of international relations from Latin America”.

A lasting initiative

In 2011, at the initiative of the French Senate, the “Latin America and Caribbean Day” was introduced, to celebrate and strengthen ties between countries of the region and France.

In 2014, the “Day” became a “Week”, or rather “Weeks”, organized and coordinated by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.

With each passing year, the Week has alternated between an educational, popular culture, and festive event, but it has always been unmissable, both in Paris and throughout France. It has become an occasion for meetings and shared reflection between Latin America, the Caribbean and France.
