France assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council for one month on March 1. The Security Council’s key priorities in March will be as follows:

  • Africa: From March 9 to 13, the Security Council will visit the Central African Republic, Ethiopia - in order to meet with the African Union - and Burundi. The mandate of the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) will be renewed.
  • Children in armed conflict: A public debate, in which UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is planning to participate, will take place on March 25.
  • The Security Council will continue to closely monitor the major international crises (Yemen, Libya, Ukraine, Afghanistan). The mandates of UNAMA in Afghanistan and UNSMIL in Libya will be renewed.

Ms. Mogherini, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, will, for the first time in this capacity, brief the Security Council on cooperation between the UN and regional organizations.
