The President of the French Republic held a telephone call with Mr Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of the State of Israel, on Wednesday, 7 August 2024.

The President reiterated the determination of France to avoid new military escalation in the region. Having called on the Iranian President to avoid a cycle of retaliation that would put the people and stability of the region at risk, he has now called on the Israeli Prime Minister to do the same, in an approach that must apply to all regional parties.

Given the increase in tensions on the border between Israel and Lebanon, all efforts should also focus on the Blue Line, in line with United Nations Security Council resolution 1701, in order to avoid regional conflagration. A war between Israel and Lebanon would have devastating consequences for the entire region.

The Head of State also reminded the Israeli Prime Minister that the absolute priorities for France were still an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, including two of our compatriots still held in the Gaza Strip, and the large-scale and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gazan population.

The President also said that France would continue to work hard with its regional and international partners to find a credible political framework based on the two-state solution, the only way to guarantee stability and security for everyone in the region.

In light of the increasing regional tensions, the two leaders agreed to maintain close contact.
