Israeli strikes in Rafah (11 February 2024)

France expresses its deepest concern following the Israeli strikes in Rafah.

More than 1.3 million people are currently taking refuge in Rafah. It is also a vital crossing point for delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza’s population. A large-scale Israeli offensive in Rafah would create a disastrous and unjustifiable humanitarian situation on a new scale. In order to prevent such a disaster, we reiterate our call for an end to the fighting.

Israel must take practical measures to protect the lives of civilians in Gaza.

In Gaza and everywhere else, France opposes any forcible displacement of populations, which is prohibited under international humanitarian law.

The future of the Gaza Strip and its inhabitants can only be as part of a Palestinian State living in peace and security alongside Israel.
