France condemns in the strongest terms the strike that hit a convoy of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Donetsk region of Ukraine on 12 September 2024. It killed three Ukrainian ICRC personnel and injured two other people. These humanitarian personnel, who were assisting vulnerable people in Ukraine, were travelling in vehicles marked with the Red Cross logo. France extends its condolences to the loved ones of the deceased and to the ICRC. It wishes the injured a speedy recovery.

Adherence to international law is an imperative. The Geneva Conventions, whose 75th anniversary is celebrated this year, require parties to the conflict to take every precaution to ensure that persons engaged in humanitarian activities are protected, in all circumstances. France reiterates its support for the ICRC’s activities in Ukraine and throughout the world, and for all humanitarian workers.
