UN – Appointment of El-Ghassim Wane as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Mali (16 March 2021)

France applauds the appointment of El-Ghassim Wane as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative and Head of the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). It assures him of its full support for his new mission and pays tribute to the outstanding work of his predecessor, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, over the past five years.

France reaffirms its commitment to stabilization in Mali and encourages MINUSMA to continue its efforts to support the implementation of the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali. It underscores MINUSMA’s crucial role in assisting with the restoration of the State and services to the population and in the protection of civilians in central and northern Mali. It also reiterates the UN’s role in international support for the transition process under way in that country.
