France congratulates Abdoulaye Bathily on his appointment as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya. We assure him of our full support for his new position as the Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). We urge all Libyan political and institutional stakeholders to cooperate fully with the Special Representative.

In the wake of the troubling violence in Tripoli, France expresses its full support for UNSMIL as it carries out its mandate, and we encourage all stakeholders to engage in an inclusive dialogue under the auspices of the Special Representative in order to preserve the country’s stability.

France stands with the UN in support of the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement of October 23, 2020, and the promotion of a viable political solution to the Libyan conflict. This will require the formation of a unified government capable of governing all of Libya and the prompt holding of transparent, credible presidential and parliamentary elections nationwide, in accordance with Security Council resolutions. It is a matter of responding to the aspirations of the Libyan people and the nearly 3 million citizens who are registered to vote.
